How to Avoid Holiday Plumbing Repairs

As we mentioned in our last post, the holidays are often prime time for plumbing repairs. In addition to your garbage disposal, other parts of your home’s plumbing system may break down during the most inconvenient times. Here are some ways to avoid holiday plumbing repairs.

Help your guests help you. It’s great when people want to help. It’s not so great when they dump too much food down the disposal or put plates in the dishwasher without scraping them. Keep an eye out and help your guests avoid causing clogs in the kitchen.

Educate your guests. Every home’s showers, sinks, and toilets work just a little differently. Talk to your guests, especially those staying overnight, about what can and can’t be flushed. Also, help them by explaining how your showers work and how hot the water tends to get.

Do some prep work. If you know you have slow-draining sinks and showers, try to clean out the hair and clogs before your guests arrive. This will make their stay more comfortable and keep the problem from getting worse.
